‘I Am Divine’ Fundraising Campaign 2.0 Launches, And Highlight Hollywood Supports Jeffrey Schwarz And His Amazing Project

I am sure anyone over 40 remembers the legendary Divine. In fact, thanks to DVD, John Waters’ find is still gaining new fans every day. Jeffrey Schwarz puts it this way, “Put on your cha-cha heels and race Divine to the finish line. YOU can help bring the FILTHIEST person alive…to the BIG SCREEN!” Like many filmmakers, Schwartz has join the league alongside others with Kickstarter, to get his project over the hurdle and receive the funding to get his project on theater screens around the world, and on DVD. Earlier this week, Schwartz, who I have reported on previously, announced his intentions of bringing “I Am Divine” to fruition.

Automat Pictures invites you to support the launch of a unique crowdfunding campaign for I AM DIVINE, the authorized ‘docutainment’ about the colorfully engaging, gloriously strange and vivaciously original world of American actor, singer, drag icon and cult legend DIVINE. Directed and produced by Jeffrey Schwarz (SPINE TINGLER! THE WILLIAM CASTLE STORY, WRANGLER: ANATOMY OF AN ICON and the acclaimed HBO Documentary Films’ VITO), the creative team is looking to secure finishing funds through Kickstarter starting today, September 21, 2012 and ending on Divine’s birthday: October 19 at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iamdivine/i-amdivine-wants-money.

“I’m thrilled about making I AM DIVINE a reality, capturing his rebellious spirit for maniacal fans and the soon-to-be converted,” says Schwarz. “Divine’s journey from a bullied, overweight sissy kid to a larger than life, world-famous glamazon who had the last laugh is the ultimate ‘It Gets Better’ story. With the blessing of the Pope of Trash himself, John Waters, and Divine’s friends and family, we’re going to deliver a documentary that fans have been itching for!”

“Divine was my close friend and fearless muse. Who else could convincingly turn from teenage delinquent to mugger, prostitute, unwed mother, child abuser, fashion model, nightclub entertainer, murderess, and jailbird? All in the same movie?” says John Waters. “That’s why I am giving my full blessing to a new documentary feature film, I AM DIVINE, to be directed by award-winning filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz.”

Featuring rare footage and fresh, new interviews from a cavalcade talent including John Waters, Ricki Lake, Tab Hunter, Mink Stole, Frances Milstead (Divine’s mother), Holly Woodlawn, Bruce Vilanch, Joshua Grannell aka Peaches Christ, Michael Musto and much more, I AM DIVINE Fundraising Campaign 2.0’s goal is to raise $40,000 in completion funds in 28 days (the length of just one menstrual cycle!), with enticing incentives for donors including but not limited to:

– Inclusion in the “Hall of Filthiness” end credit photo montage

– Trashy Travels Tours of Baltimore, where Divine and John Waters rampaged

– Rare photo prints of Divine provided by his friends and his family’s estate

– Exclusive I AM DIVINE posters, bumper stickers and other swag

– Tickets to the World Premiere screening…AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!!

So what are you waiting for, darlings? Break out those cha-cha heels, smash those piggy banks, clean out your 401k, and sell your first-born child. Here’s your chance to bring Divine’s life to the silver screen and stake your claim as the (2nd most) filthiest person alive!!! DO IT at

Harris Glenn Milstead, aka DIVINE (1945-1988) was the ultimate outsider turned underground hero. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine succeeded in becoming an internationally recognized icon, recording artist, and character actor of stage and screen. Glenn went from the often-mocked, schoolyard fat kid to underdog royalty, standing up for millions of gay men and women, drag queens, punk rockers, and countless other socially ostracized misfits and freaks. Embracing a take-no-prisoners style, he starred numerous cult classics including John Waters’ “Pink Flamingos,” “Female Trouble,” “Polyester,” and “Hairspray.” With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture. DIVINE will always be a source of inspiration and has left an indelible “beauty mark” on popular culture.

I AM DIVINE will premiere in early 2013.
