VICE, the Brooklyn-based youth media company, today announces that its team of “Basketball Diplomats” met with Kim Jong-un before thousands of people at a basketball game in Pyongyang, North Korea. The delegation consists of VICE correspondent Ryan Duffy, NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman and Moose Weekes, Buckets Blakes and Bull Bullard of the Harlem Globetrotters, as well as a production crew that will be filming for the upcoming HBO series VICE, debuting FRIDAY, APRIL 5 (11:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT).
NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman and Kim Jong-un presided over the game at a courtside table. The game was played by mixed teams that included VICE correspondent Ryan Duffy, the Harlem Globetrotters and North Korea’s “dream team” of its most talented basketball players. The final score was tied at 110 to 110.
At the conclusion of the game, Dennis Rodman stood up before the crowd and delivered a stirring speech to the thousands of attendees, saying to Kim Jong-un, “You have a friend for life.”
Following the game, the VICE-led delegation met with Kim Jong-un for supper, where VICE correspondent Ryan Duffy invited the Supreme Leader to visit the U.S. His invitation was met with laughter.
VICE founder Shane Smith says, “We here at VICE are very pleased that Kim Jong-un could make it to the game and that everyone enjoyed themselves so much. To see everyone letting their hair down and getting into the match made it all the more worthwhile. At the reception afterwards many kind words were spoken and invitations offered. The pictures of the game speak for themselves. And you gotta love the Harlem Globetrotters. They’ll put a smile on anyone’s face.”
