Winter Is Coming! HBO’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Cast British Actor Roger Ashton-Griffiths As Mace Tyrell, Highlight Hollywood News

“A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R. R. Martin has given out plenty of clues about the hit HBO adaptation’s newest casting choice, and now the choice actor to play Mace Tyrell has been confirmed on Tuesday.

Once a handsome and powerful man, the Lord of Highgarden has since let himself go similarly to the way King Robert Baratheon did. The father of the cunning and beautiful fan favorite Margaery Tyrell has never been politically savvy like his mother Olenna Tyrell (The Thorn Queen), but he has always dreamed of his daughter becoming Queen. But we’re not sure his wife is Joffrey’s command.

HBO has cast British actor Roger Ashton-Griffiths to play the role of Mace Tyrell, a character that first appears in the book “A Clash Of Kings,” but we will meet him in the show’s second half of “A Storm of Swords.”

Ashton-Griffiths has previously appeared in “The Tudors” (along with co-star Natalie Dormer) and “Torchwood,” and has been on the silver screen in “Gangs of New York”, “A Knight’s Tale” and “The Brothers Grimm,” as confirmed by George R. R. Martin himself.

“He’s a father, he’s a son.  He’s been a bishop, a cardinal, a prior, a friar, a vicar, a knight, a lord, a mayor, a director.  There’s one born every minute, but by any other name he’d smell as sweet,” Martin wrote on his Livejournal blog. “I see the long delay between visits from Froggy the Gremlin hasn’t dulled your skill at deciphering clues any. Yes, it’s the fine British character actor Roger Ashton-Griffiths, who has been cast in the role of Mace Tyrell, son to the Queen of Thorns, and father of Loras and Margaery. Thanks for playing, and congrats to those who got it right.”

As an experienced actor, fans are hoping he will be playing a lot opposite of recently Emmy-nominated Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell), Emmy-winning Peter Dinklage and Conleth Hill. Still, other fans wonder where the good-looking Margaery and Loras Tyrell got their looks from if their father is so homely.
