The American Art Awards, with an intent to introduce the best American galleries to unknown artists worldwide, selects their top 25 picks for remarkably proficient and accomplished galleries each year in March. President of www.AmericanArtAwards.com is Thom Bierdz, an artist, author, activist and actor known to millions as Phillip Chancellor III on The Young & The Restless.
Bierdz explains Idaho’s selection, “For almost twenty years, The Art Spirit Gallery has featured high-quality, original work by regional artists embracing a diversity of mediums and styles. The 4,000 square foot gallery with unimaginably high ceilings has hosted over 160 exhibitions and curated shows, focusing to showcase artists with a unique voice and devotion to craft, materials, observation and creativity.
“Gallery owner Steve Gibbs started the gallery after a successful 15-year career as an art director and graphic designer. He strives to promote high-quality art in the resort community of Coeur d’Alene, while fostering the work of local and regional artists. He joins with various arts organizations to actively promote art education and develop awareness and participation in the arts on a community and state level.
“We at American Art Awards celebrate stunning galleries with unique spirit, vision, who excel in business and reputation and also support their regional artists. This lively gallery has grown into a gathering place and Steve has evolved into a community arts leader. He has been active on the local Chamber of Commerce board, on his third term as a state arts commissioner and instrumental in forming the non-profit, Coeur d’Alene Arts and Culture Alliance.
“We proudly name The Art Spirit the Best Gallery In Idaho, 2015, and one of our 25 Best galleries In The Nation, 2015.”
THE GALLERY VISION:
Steve Gibbs’ fundamental appreciation of an inner vision wins trust from artists as well as the public, and being regionally based, the artists and community know each other, like each other, and support each other. Through this union, Steve’s dream of building Coeur d’Alene as an art destination is now becoming realized.
Locals: Dell Gish’s traditional oil paintings, Mary Farrell’s intricate printmaking, Harold Balazs’ vibrant enamels, Michael Horswill’s imaginative wall sculptures, Mel McCuddin’s method of finding an image within the paint, Beth Cavener Stichter’s self-portraits in clay are disturbing and deeply personal sculptures of animals with human anatomy…
Local artisans share gallery space with drawings, figurative pastels and bronze sculptures by internationally-recognized and local artist George Carlson, whose works have graced the Smithsonian and Denver Art Museum. A back patio is used for clay workshops and a cavernous basement holds an additional 400 pieces of inventory. There is also a mezzanine for more intimate shows.
ABOUT THE CITY:
Coeur d’Alene, located in the forests of northern Idaho, is a resort community with dramatic natural beauty, abundant opportunities for outdoor and water recreation, and an active, cohesive arts community. All of this is available in the downtown area, which embraces the northern end of 25 mile-long Lake Coeur d’Alene.
