Artists From Australia, US, India, UK, Russia, Israel, France And Denmark Win 2015 American Art Awards Art Brut

In a series of articles expanding into October, Highlight Hollywood is showcasing the 1st to 6th Place winning images of the 2015 AMERICAN ART AWARDS, one category at a time. Today we reveal the winners of CATEGORY 8 – ART BRUT.

The French artist Jean Dubuffet devised the term “art brut” in the 1940s. Meaning raw art, the term indicates art done by untrained artists working completely outside the conventions of traditional art and society. Strongly influenced by books detailing art produced by patients in insane asylums, Dubuffet began collecting artworks by institutionalized mental patients, prisoners and others whose art was disconnected from the restraints of society. Dubuffet believed a pure form of art, springing straight from the depths of the artist’s psyche, existed in this raw art.
This year the online contest, juried by the 25 Best Galleries In America, had submissions in 50 categories of art from 35 countries.
I interviewed president of, Thom Bierdz (actor, also known for his art brut paintings and his BLUE X paintings), and asked which artists this year won the ART BRUT category.
Bierdz explained, “This is my favorite category because it is unpredictable and unique to the artist. For instance, our REALISM STILL LIFE category this year had submission after submission of brilliant realistic still life. As fantastic as that is, there are no surprises. This ART BRUT category is full of surprises. 1st Place went to April White of Australia.” When asked why there are so many ties, Bierdz explains, “We ask the galleries to score each piece zero to three points. Even though 25 galleries vote, with these small amounts, it’s easy to get ties.”
