I interviewed president of, Thom Bierdz (of The Young & The Restless and painter of the BLUE X paintings) and asked which artists this year won the INNOVATIVE category.

Bierdz explained, “Billy Walsh scored highest with his 3D print of an octopus. Other high-scoring art included glued objects, collages, a wooden relief sculpture, a paper sculpture, an intricately painted box and a painted rooster in drag. We ask our galleries to score each submission up to 3 points and this low-scoring system often results in ties, which we love because we can introduce more great pieces to the press.”

Billy Walsh is an award-winning artist who has been artistically inspired by the ocean and its wildlife since he was a child; fishing, snorkeling, and boating in the warm waters of South Florida and the Florida Keys. His subject focus is mostly tropical ocean wildlife and scenery but after a decade living in Boston, Massachusetts, he also produces sea life art from New England and other cold water locations. He creates both works of realism and abstract artwork. His latest series of abstract marine life artwork emphasizes the most fundamental elements of each animal in a way that captures their realistic anatomical essence without spatial depth and nuanced detail.24AAA15.10
In early 2015, Billy was approached by Tom Sattler of Quantum Leap Associates, who had recently discovered his artwork and appreciated its simplicity, elegance and use of negative space. Years earlier, Tom and his staff at Quantum Leap had used 3D modeling and full color 3D printing techniques to explore their application to fine art, and produced award-winning 3D sculptures and 3D art prints of a similar style as Billy’s sea life artwork. Through this synergy the first 3D printed version of the Tribal Octopus was born and the positive feedback this piece has received bodes well for future 3D reproductions of Billy’s marine artwork.
In addition to producing his artwork in three dimensional format, Billy works in a variety of mediums including acrylics, watercolors, pen and ink, charcoal, and pastels. He also runs Shark Zen, an ocean apparel brand that features many of his abstract sea life designs on premium materials.
