HBO definitely has yet another Game of Thrones-style hit with its upcoming sci-fi epic, Westworld. This time, instead of adapting an in-progress book series with no end in sight, this new series is based on a low-budget 1973 sci-fi movie directed by Michael Crichton. Yes, that Michael Crichton, the all-time great! But this time around the Noland-Joy team have even more power, as HBO has enlisted two of the most creative people on the planet to bring this fantasy to premium cable.
Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Robert Ford, director of Westworld, a mysterious character, and just when you think you know him, you find out, you are wrong. The series, created by Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest, The Dark Knight Trilogy), centers on a futuristic theme park populated by androids, artificial intelligences, and regular humans. Rich patrons visit the park to live out their old west fantasies, whether sexual or violent. The show doesn’t premiere until Sunday, but HBO released these photos from the first episode for us to wildly speculate over.
The cast is stellar, with Anthony Hopkins, Louis Herthum, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden. So far, HBO is being pretty secretive when it comes to who is an android and who is not. That kind of drama sounds right up Nolan’s alley.
James Marsden as Teddy Flood, a new arrival to Westworld, is also a mysterious one. Ed Harris’s character however seems to be the most multi-layered, and mysterious, as if we can ever overuse that word in context with this wondrous series. Louis Herthum is at his best in this role that will garner him Emmy-buzz to say the very least.
Rich people playing creepy games with androids and androids becoming more intelligent and devious by the day. Wow, what a show!
