Monday Night’s ‘Bates Motel’ Rihanna Appears As Marion Crane, Will She Face Norman’s Mother’s Wrath?

Bates Motel is about to give longtime viewers a huge payoff.  Music superstar Rihanna checks in Monday (A&E, 10 ET/PT) as Marion Crane, the iconic role played by Janet Leigh in Psycho, the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film that inspired the Norman Bates prequel drama. She also appears in the March 27 episode, “Marion.”

Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin have revealed few details of Marion’s story on Bates, which charts Norman’s early years. This season, the final one for the popular series, the show  pays homage to the film without being wedded to every detail.

Regarding Psycho plot parallels, “It’s safe not to assume anything at this point,” Ehrin says.

In the film, Marion is on the run with an envelope stuffed with stolen money when she makes a fateful stop at the roadside motel overseen by the murderous Norman. The famed shower scene, in which a disguised Norman stabs Marion to death, is a film classic.

“We traverse back and forth through some of the mythology, so people who know the movie will be entertained,” Cuse says.
