Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck is to be honored with the Festival President’s Award at the upcoming 52nd edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Affleck — who picked up the Best Actor Academy Award earlier this year for his leading role in Manchester by the Sea — will present a screening of David Lowery’s new film A Ghost Story, in which he plays a recently deceased man who returns home as a white-sheeted ghost desperate to reconnect with his still-living wife.

Affleck will be joined at the fest by Lowery and producers Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston.

A Ghost Story, which Karlovy Vary describes as a “mesmerizing cinematic poem” that tells a story of loss and the enduring power of love, is set for a July 7 release.

Karlovy Vary, hosted by the Czech bohemian spa town of the same name, gives its President’s Award as a special honor, festival organizers said, to “actors, directors and producers who have contributed in a fundamental way to the development of contemporary world cinema.”

Affleck is currently in postproduction on his directorial debut feature, Light of My Life, which he also wrote and stars in, which tells the story of a father (Affleck) and daughter living on the outskirts of a society destabilized by a deadly pandemic.

“We regard Casey Affleck as one of the most intriguing actors in contemporary American film and are honored to welcome the filmmakers for [this] presentation,” said festival president Jiri Bartoska.

Karlovy Vary is set to run June 30-July 8.
