‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Co-Director Joe Russo Says, “No One Can Replace Robert Downey JR In The Series”

Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo has addressed the rumors about Robert Downey Jr stepping down as Iron Man saying that no one can replace him. Amidst celebrations for its 10th anniversary, Marvel Studios is preparing for their biggest release so far – Avengers: Infinity War, which will bring together most of the current superhero roster of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.infinitywar5ac2dbce62051_-_h_2018_0

Aside from being the crossover many Marvel fans have been waiting for, bringing together the Avengers, New Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and newcomers Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange, Infinity War will be the culmination of the MCU as we have come to know it. This is, in big part, due to stars like Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Robert Downey Jr having contracts that end with Avengers 4. With Chris Evans confirming his departure from the MCU after Avengers 4, fans are still wondering if it will be the same for Robert Downey Jr.

In an interview, co-director Joe Russo carefully addressed the rumours about Downey’s departure, saying that “there is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert” and that he never mentioned leaving the role. However, he is aware that it will eventually happen – there’s just no confirmation on when.

Joe Russo shared:   “He can’t play the character forever. I am sure there are lots other things he wants to do in his career. But he loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here.”

The MCU began back in 2008 with Jon Favreau’s  Iron Man, and Downey has since reprised the role in eight films, including a cameo in The Incredible Hulk. Not only has Tony Stark/Iron Man been a leader on the big screen but off-screen Downey has also served as such, especially while filming with a large ensemble. Joe Russo added:  “Robert is an incredible leader. He is a very warm and inclusive human being. He is great in keeping everyone’s spirits high and making everyone feel invited in the process… In the healthy creative space.”

The film is released on April 27.
