Box Office Milestone: Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Races To $438M Worldwide

He defies the naysayers. Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout earned another $20 million (-43%) for Paramount/Viacom Inc. in its third weekend for a $161.9m 17-day total. That it fell a little harder than Rogue Nation (-39% in weekend three) is probably related to The Meg overperforming this weekend. Yes, Straight Outta Compton opened with $60m during Rogue Nation’s third weekend, but there was probably a bit less explicit overlap compared to two PG-13, star-driven action thrillers.

Crazy Rich Asians is the wild card next Wednesday, as it’s the last somewhat “big” movie between now and The Nun in early September. Barring a fluke, this should easily end up joining Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom as the biggest “not a superhero” global grosser of the year. It’s still burning up the charts overseas with a current $275 million overseas cume.

That puts it 19% ahead of Rogue Nation at this juncture, including a +35% debut in Poland ($615k) this weekend and an $18.7m cume in Japan. All in the film has earned $437.5m worldwide thus far. Once it passes Ready Player One ($582m), it’ll be the year’s second-biggest “not a comic book superhero movie” grosser behind Jurassic World 2 ($1.276 billion). At this juncture, and with China still on tap for the end of the month, there is little reason not to presume a $700m+ global cume.

At a glance, we’re probably looking at a final domestic total between $202 million (if it falls hard from here on out) to $226m (if it plays like Rogue Nation going forward). If it passes the $215m gross of Mission: Impossible II (back in 2000), it’ll be Cruise’s second-biggest domestic earner behind Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds ($235m in 2005). There is an off chance that it plays like Walt Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy (1.49x its 17 day total) for a $240m final, but that seems optimistic.
