So sayeth Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc., The Nun has officially passed $300 million worldwide. The New Line release has earned $103m domestic and $203.28m overseas, giving it a $306.273m global cume.
That makes the $22m-budgeted prequel to the sequel to The Conjuring the second-largest unadjusted domestic grosser in the five-film franchise, ahead of Annabelle ($84.2m in 2014), The Conjuring 2 ($102.4m in 2016) and Annabelle: Creation ($102.1m in 2017). It sits behind only The Conjuring ($137.4m in 2013). Once it passes $110m domestic, it’ll be the second-biggest grosser even when adjusted for inflation.
It should pass the $204.4 million overseas and $306.5m global cume of Annabelle: Creation today or tomorrow to become the second-biggest overseas/worldwide grosser in the franchise as well. So, barring a catastrophic downturn, it should soon be past the $217.9m overseas cume and $320.4m worldwide total of The Conjuring 2 to become the biggest global grosser in the franchise. For a spin-off and prequel-to-the-sequel installment of a glorified expanded universe to essentially become the top-grossing movie in the franchise, yeah… that’s actually becoming a somewhat regular occurrence.
