Plácido Domingo, the legendary opera singer who has been accused of sexual harassment by more than 20 women, said Sunday that he has tested positive for coronavirus.
“My family and I are all in self isolation for as long as it is deemed medically necessary,” the 79-year-old Spanish singer wrote on Facebook Sunday morning. “Currently we are all in good health but I experienced fever and cough symptoms therefore deciding to get tested and the result came back positive.”
Domingo encouraged everyone to follow directives from the World Health Organization to stop the spread of the virus, including constant hand-washing and social distancing.
“Together we can fight this virus and stop the current worldwide crisis, so we can hopefully return to our normal daily lives very soon,” he wrote. “Please follow your local government’s guidelines and regulations for staying safe and protecting not just yourselves but our entire community.”
Domingo resigned from the opera union Friday and agreed to donate $500,000 to sexual harassment eradication programs.
Last month, the the American Guild of Musical Artists found, after a four-month investigation, that Domingo had “engaged in inappropriate activity, ranging from flirtation to sexual advances, in and outside of the workplace.”
The Los Angeles Opera said investigators ruled the accusations from at least 10 women were “credible,” but “found no evidence Domingo had ever engaged in a quid pro quo or retaliated against any woman by not hiring her at LA Opera.”
In late February, Domingo said he was “truly sorry.”
“I have taken time over the last several months to reflect on the allegations that various colleagues of mine have made against me,” he said in a statement.
“I respect that these women finally felt comfortable enough to speak out, and I want them to know that I am truly sorry for the hurt that I caused them. I accept full responsibility for my actions.”
